Freiburg secure Europa League
SC Freiburg will at least play in Europa League next season but could also go for Champions League qualification by winning last match of the season against Schalke 04. Schalke lost their match this weekend enabling Freiburg to almost close the gap between the two. The decision when it comes to relegation struggle was adjourned as Augsburg, Hoffenheim and Duesseldorf all lost their games.
SC Freiburg can plan for Europa League and maybe even a little bit bigger. After turning their match against Greuther Fuerth around to a 2-1-victory while FC Schalke 04 lost 1-2 against VFB Stuttgart the participation in Europa League next year is saved already with Freiburg sitting one point shy of Schalke on fifth place. With Schalke as last opponent next matchday maybe even the qualification for Champions League could be possible.
The chances to play in Europa League for Hamburger SV meanwhile have shrunken significantly despite their 4-1 victory over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as Freiburg are out of reach now and HSV being two points behind Eintracht Frankfurt that drew 1-1 against Bremen and have the much better goal difference. Only a victory on matchday 34 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen with Frankfurt loosing against Wolfsburg at the same time could get HSV to play Europa League next season.
Decision in relegation struggle adjourned
Werder Bremen are saved after their draw against Frankfurt but the other three teams all have to fear relegation heading into last matchday next week. FC Augsburg lost 0-3 against FC Bayern Munich and Fortuna Duesseldorf was beaten by 1. FC Nuremberg with 2-1 despite have being in the lead. Hoffenheim are still on position 17 with 28 points, Augsburg are sitting on 16 with 30 points and Duesseldorf with the same amount but the better goal difference are currently on 15th place. Hoffenheim will face Dortmund next week while Augsburg will play against already relegated Greuther Fuerth and Duesseldorf encountering with Hanover 96.
The other games on matchday 33 played out with Borussia Dortmund drawing 3-3 in Wolfsburg, Borussia Moenchengladbach winning 4-2 in Mainz and Bayer 04 Leverkusen defeating Hanover 96 with 3-1. Stefan Kießling scored his 24th goal of the season putting him in the lead for top scorer list.
