The third matchday of Bundesliga was a strange one. Four of the five games on Saturday saw a penalty. With seven dismissals the players also presented a rather questionable record. Six of the seven players who had been sent off played in the two games Freiburg against Hoffenheim and Hannover against FC Schalke 04.

The referee of the match Hoffenheim against SC Freiburg had quite a busy day and showed an overall poor performance.

The two matches between TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg as well as between Hanover 96 and FC Schalke were quite heated ones. Six of the seven dismissals of matchday three took place in those two matches with a combined nine goals being scored in the process. Hoffenheim´s Salihovic was sent off after slapping his Freiburg captain Schuster immediately after scoring the lead for TSG by penalty and right in front of the eyes of the referee. Sorg (13th minute) equalized for SCF before Volland (25th) put Hoffenheim in the lead again and Guede (29th) once more equalized for SC before Freiburg player Coquelin was sent off with the Yellow-Red Card. The first decision was okay but the second situation was analyzed wrongly by the referee.

A strong playing Sebastian Freis (65th) put SCF in the lead for the first time but Strobl (77th) equalized for Hoffenheim and set the final score 3-3. In the last minute of the match Admir Mehmedi was also sent off with red card after a questionable hand gesture towards the referee who was on his first Bundesliga game and clearly did not have his best day.
