Season review: Promoted Frankfurt surprising Bundesliga

12.06.2013 13:22

Eintracht Frankfurt played an extraordinary season for a promoted team in Bundesliga 2012/2013. Their own goals of staying in the league were more than surpassed as they finished in sixth place resulting in a ticket for Europa League next season. Armin Veh´s team constantly stayed in the upper six for the whole season.

Frankfurt´s players had a lot to celebrate on last matchday of this year´s Bundesliga season.

As promoted team Eintracht Frankfurt seemed to be widely underestimated starting in Bundesliga campaign 2012/2013. On first matchday they beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen with 2:1 after being one behind and continued the week after just where they left off. Victories against Hoffenheim, Hamburg and Nuremberg followed and on matchday five Frankfurt managed to fight off a point from champion Borussia Dortmund.

The first defeat was on matchday seven against Borussia Moenchengladbach but Frankfurt just continued to play and score well after that. Only few might have expected them to stay in the upper six and everybody was waiting for them to crack, but they just did not. Over the full season they constantly stayed in the upper six of chart finishing the first season leg on position three and sitting on sixth place at the end of the season.

New arrivals fitting in

The results for the strong season are varied and might even be found in the relegation to second League two years earlier. New arrivals like Takashi Inui (former VFL Bochum) and Stefan Aigner (TSV 1860 Munich) might not have been bound to the club if they had not played in second Bundesliga. Same goes for keeper Kevin Trapp (1. FC Kaiserslautern) who saved a lot of points with brilliant saves all over the season.

Also the young players that developed really well as Sebastian Jung and Sebastian Rode played very strong seasons resulting in multiple requests from other clubs. When it comes to the offense Alexander Meier is the name that guaranteed a lot of success. The tall attack player scored 16 times deciding several games for his team.

No important players leaving yet

Coach Armin Veh will be happy that his team almost completely will stay together for the next season. Despite some request from other clubs even Jung and Rode will continue in Frankfurt as to date. With Johannes Flum and Jan Rosenthal two players from direct rival SC Freiburg will also join Frankfurt in next season. Maybe Veh´s team will be able to surprise some teams in Europa League next campaign as they did in Bundesliga this year.
