Switzerland in next round

The FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil saw some favorites already being kicked out of the competition and now Italy followed Spain and England. After losing 0:1 against Uruguay the champion of 2006 is eliminated in group stage already - same as 2010. Meanwhile Argentina and Nigeria qualified for next round and Greece finished off Cote d´Ivoire with a last-minute penalty. Switzerland beat Honduras 3:0 to secure their ticket for the round of the last 16.


Xherdan Shaqiri was the man of the match with his three goals as Switzerland beat Honduras 3:0.

England and Spain already have been kicked out of the competition and now Italy followed. The team of Cesare Prandelli – who resigned just after the match – lost 0:1 against Uruguay which lead to Costa Rica and Uruguay surviving group stag while England and Italy have to travel back home.

In group C Columbia already had been qualified before last machtday. The match between Greece and Cote d´Ivoire was supposed to find a second place finisher in a direct duel with Ivory Coast only needing a draw. Greece scored the lead late in second half, Cote d´Ivoire equalized but then the referee decided to give a penalty in the second minute of overtime and Samaras put his team in next round by scoring.

Nigeria meanwhile secured second place behind Argentina thanks to friendly help of Bosnia-Herzegovina that beat Iran 3:1 which enabled Nigeria to finish second despite losing 2:3 against Argentina. Lionel Messi once again was the best player in his team and scored twice.

The night matches saw Ecuador and Switzerland fight for second place behind France in matches with France and Honduras. Switzerland beat Honduras 3:0 to secure their ticket to next round while Ecuador was sent home after a goalless draw against France.

Heading into the final match in group stage of Germany the following games of the round of the last 16 are already set:
